Exploring an AI tool that generates 3D models from photos or text prompts, testing and evaluating results, reviewing alternatives, and discussing potential applications.
3D modeling is quite a complex process that requires professional skills, but even such challenging tasks can now be handled by AI, though with mixed results. One such AI tool is Tripo AI, which allows you to create several 3D models for free.
To get started, sign up on the tripo3d.ai website. The service supports model generation based on text descriptions and photos. In this article, we’ll explore the second option. Keep in mind that you shouldn't expect incredible results—this AI is best suited for simple objects.
To upload your image, click on the dedicated icon next to the input field. You can also upload multiple images at once. Additionally, the generation process includes a negative prompt option and other parameters available under the settings button below the input field.
For testing, we uploaded an image of a house with a transparent background. After processing, the AI instantly provided a long list of generated 3D models. While some were decent, we focused on evaluating the actual generation quality.
As expected, the AI struggled with high detail, producing a rather primitive model with blurry areas. To further test its capabilities, we also tried generating a model from a text prompt, which delivered better results.
Tripo performed reasonably well in creating a simple 3D model of a wheel, but in our opinion, the quality is only suitable for mobile games. It might be possible to improve the output by adjusting advanced settings. We recommend checking out the guides available in the blog section on the AI’s website.
It's worth mentioning that Tripo is not the only service capable of generating 3D models. For example, there is also Sloyd AI, which might be a better option in some cases, but unfortunately, it only supports text-based generation.
