Which Neural Networks We'll Use

To remove noise and improve quality, we'll use two online services: Waifu2x and Problembo. Both are available online and offer free tools to help solve our problem.

For this experiment, we prepared a complex photo, compressed it several times, and added random noise to it. Let's see how neural networks handle the situation and improve the quality. Here's what it looks like:

Waifu2x

Neural network website: waifu2x.net

Waifu2x was originally built to enhance illustrated images like anime art, so it works best with those. But now the service also lets you upload regular photos — which is exactly what we're going to try.

To be honest, the difference isn’t that noticeable. Sure, it reduced some noise, but that’s pretty much all it did. The result is weak overall, but it might be good enough for very simple cases. Our image was clearly too much for it.

Problembo

Neural network website: problembo.com

Now this one packs more punch. We choose the photo enhancement tool and upload our test image. Although each process costs $0.06, the service gives out $0.60 daily for free — which means you can enhance up to 10 photos per day without paying.

Now this result is way better — the image quality has noticeably improved. It’s still far from perfect, but clearly a step up from the original. We used the Pic Refiner filter. Some text got slightly blurred, but with simpler images that probably won’t be an issue.

Conclusion

The takeaway is clear: Waifu2x is only good for very basic tasks, but it’s completely free and unlimited. If you just need to upscale an image or remove light noise — it’ll do the job.

For more demanding tasks, Problembo is the better choice. And with 10 free edits per day, it should be enough for personal use. Plus, the service offers other handy tools for working with photos and images.
